If it is making a noise it did not make before, switch it off now. When a drive makes clicking, grinding, buzzing, or beeping noises, they indicate that the internal mechanical parts are failing. Each time this happens (and when you turn it back on), they also degrade. Your choice whether to shut it down affects the final results more than your eventual choice of laboratory.
If it still reads, copy what matters off. Even though the drive is being very slow and throwing an error message, as long as it’s still reading data at all, there may be one last opportunity to retrieve your important files. Copy from the drive by file value (not alphabetically) to a different physical drive. Be aware that some files will likely fail during this process. And then don’t use it anymore.

Pack up your media and either come to see us at the Oxford Science Park Monday to Friday 9am to 5:30pm without an appointment; or post it fully insured. In addition print out the above shipping slip, fill in your details and place that inside the parcel along with your name, phone number, email and address so we know who sent what and when.
