USB sticks fail in a small number of predictable ways, and one of them has excellent odds.
Two superficially identical sticks can present very different prospects.
Older and larger-capacity sticks use a discrete design — a separate controller and one or more NAND packages on a small board. If the controller fails, the flash can be desoldered and read directly, then reassembled in software with the controller’s interleaving and ECC undone.
Most modern low-capacity sticks are monolithic: controller and flash fused into a single sealed package with nothing separable inside. There is no chip to remove. Recovery means locating the internal test points on the monolith and reading through them, which requires the correct pinout for that exact package. It is entirely doable and it is slower — which is the main reason two similar-looking sticks can differ in what they need.
