Elderly drives are a genuine speciality rather than an afterthought. A twenty-year-old Maxtor or an IDE drive from a machine long since scrapped presents its own problem — donors are scarce — but the recovery itself is well understood. File system repair, extraction and carving all happen against the clone. The original is never written to.

Recovered data is checked by opening it in its applications, and anything unreadable is reported by name rather than returned as a file that opens to nothing.

A single hard drive — internal, external or from a laptop — is from £300 +VAT, confirmed in a written quote after the free 48-hour diagnostic. Where the drive is part of a RAID, NAS or server, that work starts from £500 +VAT. Most jobs are no fix, no fee; clean-air and donor-part work carries a 50% deposit with the balance payable only on success.

Send the bare drive rather than the whole machine where you can — cheaper to post and quicker to start. External units are the exception and should come complete with the enclosure. Because we work at platform and firmware level rather than through consumer brand utilities, the label on the enclosure rarely sets the method: Western Digital (Blue, Black, Red, Gold, Ultrastar), Seagate (Barracuda, IronWolf, Exos and Rescue-bundled drives), Toshiba, Hitachi/HGST, Samsung and legacy Maxtor all get the same discipline — stabilise the mechanics, carry the adaptives across, rebuild the service area, image read-only. Firmware families vary; the imaging-first approach doesn’t.

The technical questions we get most about failed hard drives.

Usually, but power it off now. Clicking means the heads cannot find their servo data, and every rotation risks scoring the surface holding your files. Recovery means fitting a matched donor head-stack under filtered clean air, then imaging in short passes.

Typically firmware rather than mechanics. Drives load their operating code from a reserved service area, and if a module is unreadable the drive cannot describe itself — so it reports no capacity or a blank model while sounding perfectly healthy. The data is generally untouched.

Yes, and often. Elderly drives are a speciality rather than a problem — the recovery is well understood, though donor parts can be scarce for unusual models, which sometimes affects timescales rather than feasibility.

The drive on its own where possible — cheaper to post, less to go astray, and faster to begin work on. Any local computer shop will remove it in minutes. External units should be sent complete with their enclosure.
