Recovery software works on logical faults — deleted files, a corrupt partition, an accidental format — provided the drive is physically sound and you install it somewhere else. On a drive that is making noise or dropping out, scanning is hours of exactly the wrong stress, and drives regularly die partway through a recovery scan meant to save them.

Condensation forms on the platters as the drive returns to room temperature, and moisture where the heads fly is destructive. It was never reliable and it makes professional recovery harder.
Modern boards hold adaptive calibration data unique to that drive in a ROM chip. A donor board without that ROM either does nothing or drives the heads with wrong calibration.
chkdsk produces a consistent file system, not your files — it deletes or truncates whatever it cannot reconcile, and /r reads every sector on a disk already struggling.
Drying concentrates the mineral and salt residue rather than removing it, and residue is what actually causes the corrosion. Send it damp and sealed instead, quickly.
