Repairing a USB stick and recovering it are opposites.

Almost every “USB repair tool” works by writing to the drive — reformatting it, rewriting its controller tables, or rebuilding its file system in place. If the files matter, that is the one thing you must not do.

Manufacturer utilities, and why they erase.

Vendor tools such as low-level formatters and controller utilities exist to return a stick to a saleable state, not to preserve what is on it. They rewrite the controller’s block-mapping tables, mark bad blocks and lay down a fresh file system — which is genuinely useful if the drive is a spare and useless if it holds the only copy of something. The giveaway is in the wording: anything offering to “fix”, “restore”, “reformat” or “refresh” the drive is describing a write.

The narrow exception is read-only software run against a stick that still enumerates reliably, working from an image rather than the stick itself. If the device disappears, gets hot, or reads intermittently, no software route is safe.

A USB stick left in a laptop and knocked sideways usually breaks at the connector, where the metal shroud is soldered to the board. The memory chip almost always survives this entirely — the damage is to the joint, not the storage. Where the pads are intact the connector is re-soldered; where the pads have torn away, the traces are rebuilt or the board is bypassed and the data read directly from the chip.

What ruins these is repeated insertion. A stick that only reads when held at an angle has cracked solder joints, and each attempt to wiggle it into life fatigues the remaining connections. If it reads at all, that is the moment to stop and get it imaged.

The single fact that sets the price.

Older and larger sticks use a discrete design: a separate controller and one or more NAND packages on a small board. If the controller fails, the NAND can be desoldered and read directly, then reassembled with the controller’s interleaving and ECC undone in software.

Most modern low-capacity sticks are monolithic — controller and flash fused into a single sealed package with no separable chip. There is nothing to desolder. Recovery means locating the internal test points on the monolith itself and reading through them, which requires the correct pinout for that exact package. It is doable and it is slower, and it is the main reason two superficially identical sticks can carry very different prospects.
