JPEG and RAW files all start with recognisable byte sequences (patterns) therefore an image can be recovered from a memory card even when the entire file system is destroyed. A card that has been formatted will look just like a card that has been damaged in some way, as long as no new data has been written to it.
When you shoot another photo on the camera, that new image goes over what was erased from your memory card, so many can go at once with bursts of shots. Pull the card; do not put it back into your camera; refuse all offers to fix or format it.
Photos are probably one of the easier files to recover and the method makes a difference.
The technical reason why photo recovery works most times.
JPEG files have two recognisable header/footer bytes at each end, and all RAW formats (CR2/CR3, NEF, ARW, RAF, ORF) have easily identifiable patterns. Therefore we can reconstruct your photos from the raw media using signatures alone even if there is no file system left intact. A formatted and corrupted card both look like the same problem from this view.
The carving of an image will lose both the filename and folder hierarchy (the catalogue) where they existed before; recovered photographs should come back correct but be assigned a sequential number. Since EXIF data (camera information including date taken, etc.) is embedded into the photograph, all camera information should remain intact and the chronological order should be able to be restored with minimal sorting effort.
It applies across all forms of media.

Generally, if you don’t write anything to the card after deleting it. The delete operation does not remove your image data: it simply deletes the catalogue reference to that file; and photos can still recover quite easily due to the fact that JPEG and RAW image files contain recognisable byte structures. Remove the card and do not continue taking pictures on this card until you are finished trying to restore the deleted photos.
In all probability no. Because a camera needs to be able to reuse a formatted memory card quickly (the camera has to be ready to take another picture), even when a format operation occurs, the physical presence of the images remains intact. That being said, there may be some instances where a full format is performed by the camera; however, these instances are rare.
Typically no: both file and folder names were stored within the file system catalogue. Pictures will generally restore correctly, but the pictures may show up numbered sequentially. EXIF data is retained, thus date of capture and camera setting information remains intact and the set may be resorted by time taken.

First of all try to use another reader before you decide to send off your card. Many times these readers are faulty and therefore the card won’t be detected by the system. If the card is still not being recognised then there is a good chance that the controller has been damaged and this would require some physical repair work as opposed to just software recovery. However, the data is frequently still recoverable, depending on how much damage was done and at what point the damage occurred.
