This is not a criticism — it is simply a different business. Understanding the distinction matters because several standard Apple procedures will erase the drive you are trying to save. A real example: a MacBook Apple diagnosed and referred on.
A repair route optimises for a working Mac. A recovery route optimises for your files. When a drive is failing, those two goals point in opposite directions.
Apple Stores and Authorised Service Providers diagnose faults and replace parts. They are good at it, and for a Mac that simply needs fixing they are often the right answer. What they do not offer is data recovery — Apple states plainly that it is not responsible for data and recommends a backup before any service. In practice a failed drive is replaced, and the old one is returned to you or disposed of, not read.
That is a perfectly reasonable division of labour. The problem only arises when someone hands in a machine assuming the files come back with it.
Reinstalling macOS writes a fresh system to the volume, and on a drive with file-system damage that can land on top of the very structures needed to rebuild it. Disk Utility First Aid is a repair operation: it modifies the file system in place, which on a failing disk can convert recoverable damage into unrecoverable damage. Erase and restore does what it says. And on any Mac with a T2 chip or Apple Silicon, replacing the logic board means replacing the storage’s encryption keys along with it — the old data becomes permanently unreadable even though the flash is physically intact.
If the Mac still boots and the drive reads, copy your files off now — that is the cheapest recovery there is and no lab is needed. If it does not boot, the question becomes what kind of storage it has. A removable drive comes out and is imaged read-only, then the APFS or HFS+ volume is rebuilt from the copy. A Fusion Drive means both devices are imaged and recombined as the single logical volume they were always meant to be.
Where the storage is soldered to the logic board and that board has failed, the honest answer is that nobody can recover it — the encryption key died with the board. We say so at the diagnostic rather than after a bill.
