Deleting a file doesn’t erase it.

It removes the directory entry and marks the space reusable. Until something writes over that space, the data is still physically there — which is why what you do in the next ten minutes matters far more than what software you eventually choose. A worked example: a Dell SSD caught mid-TRIM.

The index entry goes. The data stays.

On a conventional file system, deleting marks the file’s entry as unused and returns its clusters to the free pool. Nothing is scrubbed. The bytes sit exactly where they were until the operating system decides to reuse that space for something else — which might be seconds later or months later, depending entirely on how much the drive is used afterwards.

That is the whole basis of file recovery, and it is also why urgency matters more than technique. A file deleted an hour ago on a machine that has been switched off since is in excellent shape. The same file on a machine that has been running Windows Update and browsing the web for a fortnight may be gone entirely.

Cheapest and safest first.

Recycle Bin or Trash. Obvious, frequently forgotten, and instant. Previous Versions or File History on Windows, and Time Machine on a Mac, restore from a snapshot without touching the live file system at all — always try these before any software. Cloud versioning: OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox and iCloud all keep deleted items and prior versions for a period, often 30 days, and people routinely forget the file was synced.

Only when those are exhausted does scanning software become relevant — and by then you should already have stopped using the drive.

TRIM, and the honest limit on all of this.

On an SSD, deletion usually triggers TRIM: the operating system tells the drive which blocks are no longer needed, and the drive erases them in the background to keep write performance up. That erasure is genuine and it happens within minutes, not months. So on a working, TRIM-enabled SSD, a deleted file is very often unrecoverable by anyone — not because the tools are inadequate but because the data has physically gone.

The exceptions are worth knowing: TRIM does not operate over most USB enclosures, is not used on older file systems, and cannot run if the drive has failed. That last case is the recoverable one — a dead SSD holding your data is a very different proposition from a healthy SSD that TRIMmed it.

Three situations where scanning makes it worse.

If the drive is clicking, ticking, or disappearing intermittently, scanning software is the wrong tool — it will keep a failing drive spinning for hours and can finish it off. If the deletion was on a RAID or NAS volume, single-disk tools cannot see the array correctly and may misinterpret it. And if the files were deleted weeks ago on a machine in daily use, the honest answer is often that they are already overwritten.

Often, yes. “Permanently deleted” usually just means bypassing the Recycle Bin, which removes the index entry rather than the data. The file stays on the disk until something overwrites that space, so the deciding factor is how much the drive has been used since — not how the deletion was performed.

Stop using the drive. Don’t save files, don’t install anything, and if it is your system drive, shut the machine down rather than continuing to work on it. Every write afterwards is a chance to land on the space your file occupied.

Usually not, if the drive is working normally. TRIM tells the SSD to erase blocks belonging to deleted files, and that erasure happens within minutes and is genuine. The exceptions are drives in USB enclosures where TRIM often doesn’t pass through, older file systems, and SSDs that have failed — a failed SSD holding data is still recoverable.

Only on a healthy drive, and never installed onto the drive you are recovering from — the installer itself can overwrite what you are trying to save. If the drive is making noise or dropping out, scanning software is actively harmful; it keeps a failing drive working for hours.
