Inside every orange Rugged is an ordinary 2.5-inch disk, usually Seagate. That single fact explains most LaCie failures: the mechanism is rarely the problem, and the interface almost always is.
LaCie units pair standard Seagate or WD mechanisms with proprietary bridge, Thunderbolt or RAID boards. When one stops working, the disk inside is usually healthy and unreachable rather than damaged.
The Rugged range is built for site work — the orange bumper genuinely helps with shock — but it houses a standard 2.5-inch drive and a bridge board. Two things follow. First, a Rugged that has been dropped while running can still have suffered a head crash, because the bumper reduces shock rather than eliminating it; if it clicks after a fall, power it down. Second, a Rugged that is silent or not detected is far more often a failed bridge or a damaged connector than a failed disk, and the data behind it is intact.
Newer Rugged units use USB-C or Thunderbolt, where the controller is more complex and more likely to be the failure point than the disk it fronts.
The d2 line is a single 3.5-inch drive in a heavy aluminium shell with an external power brick. A remarkable proportion of “dead” d2 units are dead power supplies — worth eliminating before assuming the worst, since a substitute brick of the correct rating costs nothing to try. Beyond that, the pattern is the usual one: bridge failures present as silence or a format prompt, while mechanical failure announces itself with noise.
2big, 5big and similar units run RAID 0 or RAID 1 across two or more disks using a proprietary controller. When that controller fails, the disks are usually fine but the array cannot be read in the enclosure — so each member is imaged read-only and the layout derived from the images, exactly as with any other RAID.
The specific risk with these is user intervention. Removing the disks and reinserting them in a different order, or connecting one directly to a computer and allowing it to be initialised, can destroy a recoverable array. If a multi-bay LaCie has failed, take the disks out only to label them, and send them in bay order or send the unit whole.
