Every Maxtor still in service is somewhere between fifteen and twenty-five years old. Most reach us not because they were being used hard, but because someone powered up a shelved drive to retrieve something and it never came back.

A drive that has sat unpowered for years is at its most vulnerable the moment it spins. Lubricant has migrated, heads may be stuck to the platter, and the board has aged. One careless attempt can end what a careful one would have recovered.

Age, not workload, is what finishes them.

Maxtor production ended after the Seagate acquisition in 2006, so the newest drive carrying the name is approaching two decades old and the DiamondMax units that arrive here are frequently older. Time alone causes three specific problems. Spindle lubricant migrates and thickens, so the motor struggles to reach speed. Heads that have parked on the platter surface rather than a ramp can bond to it — stiction — and refuse to release. And electrolytic components on the board dry out, so a drive that worked when it was shelved will not start now.

None of these are caused by using the drive. They are caused by not using it, which is why the failure so often surfaces the moment someone finally needs what is on it.

A short diagnostic you can do yourself.

A rhythmic click on power-up usually means the heads are failing to find their servo data — stop immediately. A buzz or whine that repeats every few seconds, with no spin-up, is the motor fighting stiction or a seized bearing. A drive that reaches speed and then sounds normal but is not detected points at the board or firmware rather than the mechanism, which is the most recoverable of the three.

What all of them share is that the useful information comes from the first power-up. Repeating it does not produce new information; it only produces more damage.

A stuck head-stack is released under filtered clean air and, where the heads have been damaged, replaced with a matched set from a donor of the same family and firmware. A seized motor means moving the platter pack to a donor chassis with the alignment preserved. A failed board is repaired or swapped with the original ROM adaptives carried across, because a Maxtor board from another drive will not work without them.

Then the drive is imaged read-only in short passes, and everything else — file system repair, extraction, verification — happens against the image. An ageing drive may only give you one good read, so it is used on the copy, not the original.

External Maxtors, and the enclosure question.

OneTouch, Basics and Personal Storage units are internal Maxtor drives behind a USB or FireWire bridge. As with any external, the bridge fails at least as often as the disk, so send the unit complete rather than opening it — on several models the disk is not directly addressable once removed. A OneTouch that is silent and undetected is very often a healthy disk behind a dead board.
