Samsung builds its own controllers and its own V-NAND, which makes its drives fast and makes them awkward to read once the controller stops answering. And on the portable T-series, encryption is on before you take it out of the box.
Samsung’s vertical integration means the controller, firmware and flash are all its own. Recovery depends on reaching the flash through that controller — and on whether encryption stands between you and the result.
The SATA lines — 840, 850, 860 and 870 in EVO and PRO variants — fail most often at the controller or in the firmware that drives it, rather than in the flash itself. The pattern is consistent: the drive vanishes from the BIOS, appears with a blank model string, or enumerates at a nonsensical capacity. The data is generally intact behind it.

NVMe drives in the 970 and 980 families run considerably hotter than SATA units, and thermal stress is a genuine failure cause rather than a theoretical one — particularly in thin laptops and in M.2 slots sitting beneath a graphics card. A drive that has been repeatedly throttling and recovering can eventually fail to come back at all.
Recovery means reaching the controller in its vendor mode to read the translation tables and image the flash, which is more involved than the SATA equivalent because the interface is more tightly integrated. Where the controller cannot be revived, direct NAND reads are possible in principle but produce raw flash that must be de-interleaved and corrected before it means anything.
The portable T-series ships with hardware encryption enabled, and the T7 Touch adds a fingerprint reader on top. If you set a password, that password is required — without it the data cannot be decrypted by us or by anyone, however healthy the flash turns out to be. This is worth establishing before anything else, because it determines whether a recovery is worth attempting at all.
Where no user password was set, the drive can be read through its controller in the normal way. Where one was set and is remembered, recovery proceeds and the password is applied to the image rather than to the failing drive.

One honest limit applies to every SSD: if the files were deleted from a working drive, TRIM has almost certainly erased the underlying blocks already and there is nothing to recover. That is a different situation from a drive that failed while holding your data, which is the recoverable case. The diagnostic establishes which you have before you commit to anything.
