The service area, and why the drive lies about itself.

Seagate drives keep their operating firmware in a reserved service area on the platters, organised as modules. If a module becomes unreadable — through wear, a bad shutdown, or a translator that has grown inconsistent — the drive cannot complete its startup. The result is a disk that spins perfectly and sounds healthy but presents nothing usable: no capacity, no model string, or a size that bears no relation to reality.

The important point is that the user data is untouched. Recovery means repairing or substituting the affected modules through the drive’s diagnostic interface until it enumerates correctly, then imaging it read-only before anything else is attempted. It is precise work, but the odds are good.

Shingled drives, and why they behave oddly.

Several Barracuda and Expansion models use shingled magnetic recording, where tracks overlap like roof tiles to increase density. Writes go first to a small conventional cache and are folded into the shingled region later, which means the drive is often reorganising data in the background long after you finished writing it.

For recovery, that has two consequences. Performance under load can look like a failing drive when it is not, so an SMR drive that stalls during a large copy is not necessarily dying. And once a drive genuinely does start failing, an interrupted background fold can leave data in an inconsistent state between the cache and the shingled area — which is one more reason not to leave a struggling drive powered up in the hope it settles.

Barracuda, IronWolf and Exos.

Barracuda desktop drives are the volume product and arrive with the full spread of faults — firmware, heads, boards. IronWolf is the NAS line, so these usually reach us as array members rather than singly, and bay order matters more than the individual drive. Exos is enterprise, frequently SAS rather than SATA and often from a server or RAID set, where the recovery is an array reconstruction that happens to involve Seagate disks. Expansion and Backup Plus externals are internal drives behind a bridge; send them whole, since the bridge fails at least as often as the disk.

Usually a firmware fault rather than a mechanical one.
