A Console Is Not Another Computer, Which Is Why It Counts

Her enquiry describes a test better than two computers could provide. A drive "unrecognisable by the computer and by the console. The decode: what the console proves, and what the message says

Why two laptops establish less than people expect: if both run the same system, they share drivers, device handling, filesystem support and power management. A fault in any of those affects both identically, so two machines of the same kind eliminate one machine's hardware and very little else.

Why a console is a genuinely different test: it runs its own operating system, written by a different organisation, with its own device stack, its own tolerances for slow responses, and its own expectations about power. It shares almost nothing with a desktop system except the physical connector.

So what her result means: the drive failed on three hosts of two entirely unrelated designs. That eliminates the software layer more thoroughly than testing on a dozen similar computers would, and it is a stronger control than most enquiries contain.

What that message frequently indicates in practice: excessive current draw or an electrical fault causing the host's port protection to intervene. Some hosts disable the port after such an event, so a port that has seen the drive once may behave differently afterwards — worth knowing if a previously working port suddenly seems dead.

What remains to be eliminated: the enclosure. A failed bridge board produces exactly this while the drive inside is untouched, and connecting the drive directly is a single step that either resolves the case or narrows it to the drive itself.

What must stop meanwhile: further connection attempts, particularly to machines that matter. A device causing port protection to trip is not something to keep introducing to laptops.
