His enquiry contains a sentence most people never think to include. He is right, and the connection is more direct than a guess — a drive that does not complete its shutdown is a drive whose last writes may never have been committed, and that is precisely how filing structures end up inconsistent.

The decode: what a proper shutdown does, and what skipping it leaves

What happens when a drive powers down correctly: the system tells it no further work is coming. Anything held in the drive's cache is written out to the platters, the filing structures are marked as cleanly closed, and the heads are parked. Only then does power stop.

Why the cache matters more than people expect: a drive accepts writes into memory and reports them complete before they reach the surface, because that is faster. So at any moment there is data the computer believes is stored and the platters have not yet received — and the shutdown sequence exists to close that gap.

What an incomplete power-down leaves behind: whatever was in the cache, unwritten. If that included a filing structure update — which it very often does, since structures are written constantly — the volume is left describing a state that was never completed, and the record is internally inconsistent.

Why once is survivable and repeatedly is not: filesystems are designed to recover from a single unclean stop, and they mostly do. Weeks of it is a different matter — each occurrence leaves a small inconsistency, and eventually the system meets a volume it cannot interpret and asks to format it.

So his suspicion is correct and the mechanism is specific: the shutdown fault came first, produced repeated uncommitted writes, and the structural damage accumulated until the volume stopped mounting. The format prompt is the last event in a sequence, not the first.

Why that matters for what is recoverable: nothing physical happened. The content was written normally and is entirely intact — what failed was the bookkeeping, which is exactly the class of fault that reconstructs from surviving structure copies.

Why noticing the precursor is worth something even now: it dates the damage and it explains why the enclosure should be suspected. A drive that will not power down properly frequently has an enclosure that is not managing the sequence — and he has already removed it, which was the right instinct.

The general point worth carrying: a drive behaving oddly at shutdown is reporting something. It is among the earliest signs available and among the easiest to dismiss, because everything still works.
