The Firmware Looked and Found Storage With Nothing Bootable On It
Her enquiry pairs a message with the event that produced it. A laptop showing "no operating system found. I was using it and the battery was showing as low — I thought I had twenty minutes or so, but it went dead, and when I plugged in the power cord it showed the above message." That message is more encouraging than it sounds, because a machine that cannot find an operating system has already found a drive to look on.

The decode: what the firmware is actually saying
What has to happen before that message appears: the firmware enumerates attached storage, finds a drive, and asks it for the small structure at the very beginning that says where the operating system starts. Every one of those steps succeeded. The drive is present, it identified itself, and it answered.
What the message therefore means: that the structure it read did not point at anything bootable. It is a statement about the contents of a few sectors, not about whether a drive exists — which is why it is a very different message from one reporting no drive at all.
Why the power loss explains it precisely: a machine writing when power disappears leaves whatever it was writing half-finished. Boot structures are small and written rarely, but the system was in use, and an operating system running is continuously updating structures elsewhere on the volume — any of which can be left inconsistent enough that the boot chain no longer resolves.
Why her documents are not involved at all: the region the firmware reads is a tiny fraction at the very start of the drive. Content occupies the overwhelming remainder and was never touched by the interruption — it was written normally, days or years earlier, and it sits where it always did.
What the battery detail adds: a laptop that dies while reporting twenty minutes remaining has a battery whose capacity estimate is wrong, which is ordinary in an older machine. It also means the shutdown was entirely abrupt — no warning, no flush, no orderly close — which is the version most likely to leave structures inconsistent.
What must not happen, and every guide suggests it: a start-up repair, a boot record rebuild, or a reinstallation. All of them write to the drive, and a reinstallation in particular will offer to prepare the disk, which is the destructive version of the same instinct.
Why the drive comes out instead: on a machine of that kind the storage is removable, so it reads independently on another computer entirely. The question of whether the laptop boots stops mattering, and the documents come off without anything being written to it at all.
Why the boot problem is then a separate matter: once the content is safe, repairing or reinstalling costs nothing.
