His enquiry asks a question that deserves a straight answer rather than a sales one. A drive sent away, where "when they received it they said that the top information label was missing and they couldn't do anything. Is this correct?" Partly. The label genuinely matters, for reasons worth explaining — and a drive does not stop being identifiable when a sticker comes off, because it carries its own identity inside.

The decode: what the label carries, and where else it lives

Why the label matters, and it genuinely does: it carries the model, the serial, the firmware revision, and frequently the manufacture date and site. Those are used to source donor parts, and head and board matching is exacting — parts from the wrong revision, or from a different manufacturing run of the same model, frequently will not work.

Why matching is that demanding: heads are calibrated to the drive they were built with, and boards carry drive-specific adaptive data. A donor has to be the same in ways that go beyond the model number, which is why the extra detail on a label is used rather than ignored.

So a provider saying it complicates things is telling the truth. Their process starts with the label, and without it that process stops.

Now where the same information also lives. The drive holds its own identity in firmware — model, serial and revision are stored internally and reported when the drive is asked, which is how a computer knows what is attached without reading a sticker. Where a drive powers up at all, that is read directly.

Where else it is recorded: the board carries its own markings identifying its revision and family, and the physical characteristics of the assembly — connector layout, motor type, form details — place a drive within a known family even when nothing is readable electronically.

So what the provider's answer actually meant: that their process requires the label. Which is a statement about their process rather than about the drive, and "we couldn't do anything" overstates it.

The honest qualification, because it should be said: identifying a drive without its label is more work, and where the drive will not power at all it relies on physical characteristics rather than firmware, which is less precise. It may cost more and it may take longer. That is a fair thing to be told; impossible is not.

What is worth supplying if he has it: the machine the drive came from, any purchase record, or a photograph taken before the label came off. Any of those narrows the family immediately.
