Her enquiry asks a question with a better answer than she expects. Having attempted a recovery herself: "it has not recovered any of my photo library. There are now hundreds of thousands of numbered record files. Although I know I could individually convert these into images, I would rather not spend the time. I was wondering if you're able to recover" them. They do not need recovering. The content came back intact and the names did not — and photographs carry enough inside them to be sorted automatically.

The decode: what those files are, and how to organise them without opening any

What happened during her recovery: the software found the records describing each file's content and could not find the directory entries giving names and folders. So it wrote each file out labelled with its internal record number — which is the honest thing to do, since inventing names would be worse.

Why that means the recovery largely worked: the content is there. Every photograph is intact and openable, and what is missing is the filename and the folder it sat in. That is a labelling problem rather than a data problem, and it is much smaller than it appears.

Why the scale makes it feel hopeless: hundreds of thousands of unnamed files cannot be reviewed by a person. At one second each, that is weeks of work — so the instinct that it is impractical is correct, and the conclusion that it therefore cannot be done is not.

The thing that makes it tractable, and most people do not know it: photographs carry metadata inside the file itself. The date and time of capture, the camera or phone that took it, the exposure settings and frequently the location are written into the image by the device — entirely independently of the filename or the folder.

What that means practically: every one of those files can be read for its capture date and sorted into a dated structure automatically. A library that looked like an undifferentiated heap becomes years and months, in the order it was taken, without anybody opening anything.

Why that is usually better than the original folders: most people's photograph folders are less organised than the dates inside their photographs. The metadata is more reliable than the filing was.

What else can be separated the same way: file type, so documents, video and images are divided; and device, so photographs from different phones or cameras land separately.

What is still worth doing to the drive itself: recovering the directory structures properly. Where they survive, the original names and folders can be restored — and her own attempt not finding them does not mean they are gone, only that consumer software running through the operating system did not reach them.
