The Quantity of Data Barely Affects the Price, and the Fault Decides It

Her enquiry states a constraint plainly and deserves a plain answer. A primary school teacher unable to reach her planning and resources: "there is not a large amount of data on the drive, I would estimate well under 50GB. Unfortunately my finances just don't allow me to stretch to" the figure she has been quoted elsewhere. How much data is on a drive is almost irrelevant to what a recovery costs — what sets it is what is wrong, and she does not yet know.

The decode: the free sources first, then what actually drives the price

Why teaching material is worth searching for elsewhere before anything else: it is shared more than almost any other kind of content. Planning gets emailed to colleagues, uploaded to school systems, attached to messages, and stored in shared folders — often without being thought of as a backup.

Where to look, and all of it costs nothing: the school's network storage and shared areas; sent items in her email, where attachments accumulate for years; any cloud account the school provides; and colleagues teaching the same year group, who may hold versions of the same resources.

Why that is a serious suggestion rather than a polite deflection: for this particular kind of material it frequently works. A teacher's planning is the sort of thing that exists in several places by accident, and half an hour of looking may recover most of it.

Now the pricing question, answered honestly. Fifty gigabytes and five hundred gigabytes cost much the same to recover. The work is not proportional to the quantity — it is determined by what has to be done to make the drive readable at all.

What actually sets the figure: whether the fault is logical or physical. A drive that works while its filing structures are damaged is reconstruction work at the inexpensive end. A drive needing its assembly opened and donor parts sourced is a different order of cost, because a donor drive is purchased and consumed and the work is skilled and uninterruptible.

Why that matters for the figure she has encountered: a quotation given before anybody has examined the drive is a quotation for an assumed fault. She may be weighing a price for a problem she does not have.

Why the assessment costing nothing is the practical point: establishing which of those two she is facing costs her nothing at all, and produces a fixed written figure rather than an estimate that moves. Knowing is free; only the work is not.

What can reduce it further if the fault is at the expensive end: scoping. Naming the folders that matter, and excluding anything already recovered from other sources, makes for a smaller job with an earlier confirmation.
