The situation

A marketing consultant closed her laptop on Thursday evening and opened it on Friday to a firmware screen reporting no boot device. Nothing had been dropped, spilled or updated. Three years of client work sat on a 512 GB NVMe drive with a cloud sync that covered documents but not the working project folders.

First look and diagnosis

The M.2 drive was removable, which settled the first question — on many ultrabooks it is not. Connected to a separate machine it did not enumerate at all: no capacity, no model, no response to standard commands.

That is the classic SSD controller fault. Unlike a hard drive, an SSD gives essentially no warning, because SMART reports flash wear reasonably well and controller health barely at all. The drive is fine until the layer that presents it stops working, at which point everything disappears at once while the NAND behind it remains entirely intact.

The recovery

The controller was reached in its vendor-specific technical mode — a diagnostic path that bypasses the normal interface and allows the service area and translation tables to be read directly. Those tables are what map logical addresses to physical flash locations, and without them the NAND is just undifferentiated data.

With the tables extracted, the drive was imaged read-only through controller-level access, working in short passes around the points where it dropped off the bus and re-reading unstable regions until they returned consistent results.

Verifying and returning the data

The NTFS volume rebuilt from the image without repair. Project files were opened in their applications rather than counted, and the set returned on fresh media.

Outcome

A complete recovery. Worth noting what made it straightforward: the drive was removable, no firmware update had been attempted, and it had not been repeatedly power-cycled. Each of those would have narrowed the options, and the first is increasingly not a given on thin laptops.

SMART reports flash wear but says little about controller health, which is the commonest catastrophic fault. Once a drive starts dropping out, do not update its firmware: that rewrites the service area a recovery needs to read, and an update that stalls can leave it permanently unreadable. Questions we’re often asked

My SSD disappeared with no warning — is that normal?

Unfortunately yes. SSDs fail abruptly because the commonest serious fault is the controller, and SMART reports flash wear rather than controller health. The drive is fine until the layer presenting it stops, at which point everything vanishes at once.

Is the data still there if the drive isn’t detected?

Usually. The NAND holds your data regardless of whether the controller can present it. Recovery means reaching the drive in vendor mode to read its translation tables, then imaging through controller-level access.

Should I update the firmware to fix it?

No. A firmware update rewrites the service area a recovery needs to read, and on an unstable drive an update that stalls can leave it permanently unreadable. The same applies to secure erase.

What does NVMe recovery cost?

From £300 plus VAT after a free 48-hour diagnostic and a written quote. Controller-level work carries a 50% deposit with the balance due only on success.
