Her enquiry describes an assessment made at a distance. A memory stick in "total failure, not detected, not recognised. I work in a college and phoned our offsite team for suggestions, and they concluded from my description" what was wrong. A description is the only thing a remote team has — and for a device that is simply not detected, a description cannot distinguish between several quite different faults with quite different prospects.

The decode: what "not detected" is compatible with
Why a remote team is working blind here: "not detected" is one observation and it is the least specific one a storage device can produce. Everything that stops a device introducing itself produces the same silence, whatever the cause.
The first possibility — the connector. Repeated insertion fatigues the joints securing the connector to the board, and a fractured joint means no electrical path. This is the commonest physical failure on sticks, it is frequently repairable, and the memory is entirely untouched.
The second — the controller. The component that presents the storage and manages the mapping between addresses and physical blocks. If it fails, the device is silent while the memory holding the data is unaffected, and reading past it is established work.
