The decode: what he established, and what reassembly does not undo
Why his finding is worth having: he checked a specific hypothesis and excluded it. The heads are not adhered to the platter — which rules out the commonest reason a drive fails to start and redirects the diagnosis toward the head assembly, its positioning circuitry, or the drive's ability to read its own configuration. That is a real result.
Why the clicking has another explanation now: with adhesion excluded, the sound is the head assembly moving to a position, failing to find its reference, returning to park and retrying. The mechanism is working and it cannot read what it is looking for, which is a different family of fault from a stalled drive.
