A liquid-damaged MacBook Pro with storage soldered to a logic board that no longer functioned. The memory chips were physically fine — and that made no difference whatsoever, for reasons worth setting out properly.
The spill had destroyed the logic board: corrosion across the power circuitry the storage depends on, visible under magnification, with no prospect of bringing it up. That alone would be recoverable on most machines — you take the drive out and read it elsewhere. On this one there is no drive to take out.
The flash is soldered directly to that board, and on T2 and Apple Silicon models it is encrypted at rest with a key held inside the security chip and fused to that individual board. Three facts, and together they close the matter: the flash can only be addressed through the board, the board is gone, and the key went with it.
It is worth being specific about chip-off, because it is offered for these machines and sounds plausible. Desoldering the NAND packages and reading them directly is technically possible, and they survive liquid damage well. What comes back is the encrypted contents. The key never leaves the secure enclave, cannot be transferred to a donor board, and cannot be brute-forced in any meaningful timeframe. A successful chip-off on one of these yields a perfect copy of data that nobody can read — which is not a recovery, however it is billed.
So we declined and charged nothing. The owner had already been quoted four figures elsewhere for “board-level data extraction”, which is the reason she sought a second opinion. What we could do was point her at what remained: an old Time Machine drive at a relative’s house, drafts emailed to clients as attachments, and a Word autosave folder on a previous laptop. Between them she recovered most of the book.
The transferable point. On 2018-and-later Intel Macs with a T2 chip, and on every Apple Silicon model, the backup is the recovery — and it has to exist before the failure rather than after it. Where a Mac’s drive does lift out, recovery is routine from £300 +VAT, and a Fusion Drive is £550 +VAT flat.
