Recovering the Files and Reusing the Drive Are Different Jobs

His enquiry contains a fork he has not noticed he is standing at. A 1TB drive "passed on to me by my mate that is corrupted. He's told me I might find some useful files on it if I can retrieve the data, otherwise I may have to format it to get any use" from it. Those two outcomes have opposite first steps — and the second one carries a question about the drive that matters more than the files.

The decode: the fork, and the question underneath both branches

If he wants the files: do nothing to the drive. No format, no repair, no consistency check, and no writing of any kind. A drive with a damaged filesystem holds its content intact, and every action taken to make the drive usable is an action that removes what he might have wanted.

If he wants the drive: formatting is entirely reasonable and takes minutes. But it should not be the first step either, because there is a question that applies to both branches and almost nobody asks it.

The question: is the drive healthy? "Corrupted" is a description of a filesystem, and filesystems become damaged for two quite different reasons. Sometimes through interruption — an unclean shutdown, a cable pulled — on hardware that is perfectly sound. Sometimes because the drive is failing, and the structures could not be reliably written or read.

Why that matters for reuse specifically: formatting a failing drive produces a working-looking drive that will fail again, quite possibly holding something he cares about by then. A format writes a fresh filesystem and says nothing about the surface underneath it — so the fault that damaged the original structures is still there, waiting.

How to establish it, and it is free: read the drive's self-reported statistics. Reallocated sectors, pending sectors, powered hours, error counts. A drive with a clean report and a damaged filesystem is a good drive that had an accident; one reporting reallocations is a drive on its way out, and no amount of formatting changes that.

What to do with a second-hand drive generally: read those figures before trusting it with anything. A drive passed on for free has an unknown history — hours, heat, drops, and whatever prompted the previous owner to part with it. That history is partly readable and it takes seconds.

On the contents, one practical note: the files on it belong to somebody else and may include personal material the previous owner has forgotten is there. Worth mentioning to him what turns up rather than assuming it was intended.
