His enquiry describes an attempt that was halted by an obstacle. A portable drive that "would connect but the head assembly can be heard clicking and trying to reset. The decode: why opening the case would not have helped

What removing a portable drive from its enclosure achieves: it eliminates the bridge board, so a drive that is not presenting because of a failed interface can be reached directly. That is the single most useful first step in this archive — for drives that are silent.

Why the rounded screw was fortunate: because disassembly rarely stops at the enclosure.
