The decode: what time does, and why the assumption is asymmetric
What dormancy does to a drive, in three ways. Lubricant in the spindle bearing migrates and thickens, so a bearing that turned freely becomes stiff. Heads resting on a surface can adhere to it. And components on the board degrade with age regardless of use, which is why drives that have never been switched on still fail.

How to narrow it without remembering, and all of these are free: the last-modified dates on any files still visible, which bound the interval directly. Purchase records or warranty registration for the drive. Or simply what was happening when it was last in use — a house move, a job, a machine that has since been replaced. Approximate is entirely adequate.
Why it is worth narrowing at all: it changes what is expected. A drive dormant eighteen months that will not spin is more likely a board fault; one dormant a decade is more likely a seized bearing, and knowing which is likely shapes the first steps.
