He Offered to Take the Image Instead of the Files

His enquiry names a deliverable most people do not know exists. A card that will not read, where he has cleaned the contacts and found "physical damage or a bend towards the back. I need photos from this card. I can work with a raw image of the drive or other unprocessed formats." Accepting an image rather than restored files removes a whole stage of work — and for somebody able to use one, it is a smaller job with the same outcome.

The decode: what the bend means, and what the deliverable changes

Why the bend is the significant detail rather than the reading failure: a card is largely inert packaging around a small silicon die and fine internal routing. Flexing it stresses both — routing can crack where it runs across the flex point, and the die itself can fracture if the bend passes over it.

Why its position matters more than its severity: the die occupies a specific region, and a card can be visibly deformed while it remains untouched. A bend toward the rear may be entirely peripheral, which is assessed under magnification against the known internal layout rather than judged by appearance.

What cleaning the contacts establishes: that he has already eliminated the simplest cause. Provided it was done with solvent and a soft cloth rather than abrasively, it costs nothing and removes contamination from the list.

Now the deliverable, which is the useful part of his message. A recovery normally has two stages: reading the medium, and turning what was read into files with names and folders. The second stage is a substantial part of the work — reconstructing the filesystem, resolving fragmentation, validating that files open.

What a sector-level image is: the contents of the medium as a single file, exactly as read, with no interpretation applied. Everything is in it, in the order it was stored, and anybody with the right tools can mount it, carve it or examine it themselves.

Why accepting one is a legitimate choice: for somebody who can work with it, the second stage is duplicated effort. Asking for the image alone reduces the work, the time and the cost, and it hands over more rather than less — an image contains everything, including material a file-level recovery might not surface.

Why it is not right for most people: an image is not usable without tools and some familiarity. Most owners want photographs they can open, and delivering an image to somebody who cannot mount it is delivering nothing.

What that makes worth saying in an enquiry: if you can work with an image, say so. It is a real option and it is almost never offered unprompted.
