Taking It Out Was Right, and Drying It Matters More
Her enquiry describes a good decision made quickly. A camera "dropped in water, and I took out my card to try and save it, but it's not being recognised by my phone or computer." Separating the card from a device that has finished is exactly the right instinct. The step in between is the one that gets skipped — the card was inside the camera, which means the card went into the water too.

The decode: what survives water and what does not
Why cards survive water comparatively well: the memory and controller are moulded into a solid plastic body with no openings, no seams and no moving parts. Water cannot reach the components themselves in the way it reaches a circuit board in a camera. The exposed part is the row of contacts along one edge.
So what liquid actually does to one: leaves residue on those contacts, which can bridge them, and starts corroding the metal. Both are surface problems and both are addressable — which is why the prospects here are reasonable and considerably better than for the camera.
The step that matters most, and it is the one usually skipped: drying. A card that has been submerged is wet in and around the contact area, and inserting it while damp puts water directly across the connections in a powered reader. That can bridge contacts, damage the reader, and stress the card — turning a recoverable situation into a worse one at the moment somebody is trying to help.
What proper drying looks like: days rather than minutes, at room temperature, with the card resting so the contact edge is exposed to air. No heat — a hairdryer or a radiator drives residue further in and can distort the body. No rice, which does nothing.
Why it should be said if it was inserted wet: not as a confession but as information. A card that has been powered while damp is assessed differently — for damage to the contacts and to the controller — and knowing it saves a step.
What the two failed devices establish: a phone and a computer both declining to recognise it is a proper elimination of the hosts. The card is the subject, which was worth confirming.
Why the camera is a separate question: a submerged camera is a circuit board with openings, a battery, and no protection at all — it is a much worse position than the card, and it holds no data. Nothing about the camera's condition predicts the card's, and the two should not be assessed together.
What must not happen: no further insertions until it has been dried and cleaned. Every attempt while residue remains risks the contacts and whatever it is put into.
