He Offered Two Details and Both of Them Matter

His enquiry supplies information nobody asked for, with an apology for not knowing whether it is relevant. A drive that will not load his files: "it might be bad sectors or something else, can't know. The disk frame has never been opened and it's not a solid-state disk. I don't know if it matters for the price." Both of those facts matter a great deal — and volunteering them is worth more than the symptom description he was apologising for.

The decode: why each of his two facts changes something

The first — never opened. This is the single most useful thing anybody can say about a mechanical drive. An assembly that has been opened in ordinary air is contaminated, and a drive known to be sealed is handled quite differently from one whose history is unknown: it can be inspected and worked on with the assumption that the interior is as the manufacturer left it.

Why it also affects the figure: a contaminated drive requires surface and particulate assessment before anything else, and carries a materially worse prognosis if debris has been struck. Sealed is cheaper and more likely to succeed, and he was right that it bears on price.

Why saying it unprompted is unusual: most people mention opening only if asked, and some do not mention it at all. Confirming a drive is sealed is a positive assertion rather than the absence of a confession, and it saves an assessment step.

The second — mechanical rather than solid-state. The two device types require opposite handling. A solid-state drive that misbehaves can be connected repeatedly at no physical cost; a mechanical one in a fault state is damaged by every attempt. Knowing which before anything is touched determines the very first instruction given.

Why it also determines the technique entirely: mechanical faults involve heads, motors, surfaces and donor parts. Solid-state faults involve controllers, translation layers and chip-level reading — different equipment, different specialisms, different prospects. Nothing about the two overlaps except the word "drive".

Why his uncertainty about the fault is fine: he says it might be bad regions or might be something else, and that is the correct posture. Diagnosing the fault is what an assessment is for — what he cannot supply from an assessment is history, and history is exactly what he did supply.

So the general point, worth carrying to any enquiry: describe what has happened to the device, not what you think is wrong with it. Whether it was opened, dropped, powered while wet, connected to anything unusual, or worked on by anybody — those are facts only the owner has, and they change the handling before anybody looks at it.
