The Questions Worth Putting to Anybody Who Handles It

Her enquiry asks something almost nobody asks and everybody should. A stick damaged by a faulty port, holding confidential documents, "so I would need assurance that data protection will not be broken." That is a reasonable requirement and it has concrete answers — six of them, all of which any provider should be willing to give in writing before a device is sent anywhere.

The decode: the six questions, and why the third is the one people miss

First — who has access to the data during the work. Not a promise that it is safe, but a number: how many people, in what roles, and whether access is logged. A small answer is a good answer.

Second — whether the work is subcontracted. This is the one that catches people out. A provider without in-house capability for a given fault may send the device elsewhere, which multiplies the handlers and moves the data somewhere the customer never agreed to. Ask directly, and ask whether anything leaves the country.

Third — what happens to copies after delivery, and this is the question that matters most. Recovery works from images, not from the original device, and those images are complete copies of everything. Many providers retain them for a period as a safety net — which genuinely protects customers whose delivery fails, and which is a live consideration for confidential material. So ask how long, and ask for destruction on confirmation rather than on a schedule.

Fourth — how the device itself comes back or is destroyed. A stick that cannot be repaired still holds the data, and it should be returned or destroyed to a stated standard rather than simply disposed of.

Fifth — how the recovered material is delivered. An encrypted device handed over directly is a different proposition from an unencrypted one posted, or a download link that stays live.

Sixth — whether all of the above will be put in writing. A provider unwilling to state its terms in an email is telling you something, and the request costs nothing to make.

On her actual fault, briefly: a stick damaged by a faulty port has taken electrical or mechanical damage at the connector and the board immediately behind it. The memory is a separate component and is almost certainly untouched — flash cells have nothing mechanical to break and are not reached by a bad port.

And a note on the documents: material about other people carries obligations that material about yourself does not, and whoever it belongs to may need to know it became inaccessible.
